In the epilogue of Into The Wild, Walt, Billie, and Jon take a helicopter to Stampede Trail. It was time for Chris's parents to visit the place where their son met his end. When Billie first sees the vicinity of Stampede Trail, she mentions to Walt that it reminds her of where she grew up and says that Chris must have loved it there. When Walt took in the surroundings he wasn't very happy and said he had many reasons for why he dislikes Alaska, however, he can see why the place appealed to Chris. They walked quietly around Stampede Trail, touring the nearby woods for 30 minutes. When they went into the bus they gazed around for a long time, taking everything in. Of course they were mourning for their son, but there were no tears. Walt was in a reflective mood and had very little to say, but he became more at ease than he has since the death of his son. This visit they made to Stampede Trail gave them a better understanding of why their son came into this country. Billie says its comforting knowing that Chris was there. In the beginning, Walt and Billie didn't know how they were going to react, but were glad they came. Their visit gave them closure.
